A projected 80 million travelers could hit serious roadblocks due to winter storms sweeping the nation, threatening to turn Thanksgiving into a travel nightmare?

A record number of Americans are set to travel this Thanksgiving, with 71.7 million opting for road trips, 5.84 million taking to the skies, and 2.3 million using other modes of transport.

Major travel days on Tuesday, November 21, and Monday, November 27, bookend the holiday week.

However, Mother Nature might have other plans.

The weather forecast predicts a mix of snow, rain, and storms across the United States.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada, which is expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds.

Snowfall and hazardous conditions threaten to disrupt travel in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions on Monday.

The storm will then make its way east, potentially impacting travel on the Interstate 95 corridor with rain from cities like Pittsburgh to New York.

By Tuesday, eastern U.S. temperatures are expected to be above average, but they will drop by midweek due to a cold front progressing through the country.

“Thanksgiving is the busiest holiday for travel, and this year we’re expecting to set new records across the board, from driving to flying and cruising,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel.

“Americans reconnect with family and friends over Thanksgiving, and travel is a big part of that. AAA continues to see travel demand soar post-pandemic with our members looking for new adventures and memorable vacations,” she added, cited by The Mirror.

Meanwhile, severe weather is expected to impact California and the Pacific Northwest thanks to heavy rain and wind.

Over five inches of rain could fall in Central California.

Travel disruptions are possible in areas like Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

For those planning Thanksgiving Day parades or outdoor events, the weather could throw a wrench in the works.

There is potential for precipitation in the eastern U.S., with snow expected in regions like the Middle Mississippi Valley, Upper Ohio Valley, and the Northeast.

“Stormy weather may continue in some areas of the East through Thanksgiving Day, disrupting annual parades, turkey trots, football games and outdoor gatherings,” according to AccuWeather.

Black Friday also looks precarious for travelers, with rain on the horizon for both California and the Eastern Seaboard.

The FOX Forecast Center warns that post-Thanksgiving cold air from Canada could lead to below-average temperatures across the country, with the northern Plains experiencing extreme lows of -10 degrees.
