(TheRedAlertNews.com) – BREAKING NOW: The oldest United States Senator, Democrat Diane Feinstein, is finally ready to pull the plug.
Specifically, California Senator Dianne Feinstein announced today that she will not run for re-election in 2024 but intends to finish her term.
Feinstein has been in the Senate since 1992 and was the first woman to chair the Intelligence and Rules committees, as well as the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee.
Before her time in Congress, Feinstein was the first female mayor of San Francisco.
During her Senate career, Feinstein was known for advocating for the 1994 assault weapons ban, although she has struggled to renew it since its expiration in 2004. She also publicly defended Christine Blasey Ford’s credibility during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. However, she withheld a letter alleging that Kavanaugh had assaulted Ford until the hearings began.
Feinstein has faced questions about her mental faculties in recent years, and in 2021, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer passed her over for the position of Judiciary Committee chair. The position was given to Senator Dick Durbin instead. Washington Senator Patty Murray, the second-longest-serving Democratic senator, was named president pro tempore in 2023.
Feinstein’s retirement has prompted several potential candidates to declare their interest in running for her seat. Democratic Representatives Adam Schiff and Katie Porter have already declared their candidacy, while Representative Barbara Lee is expected to do so by the end of February. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has conditionally endorsed Schiff, stating that she will support him if and when Feinstein retires.
Feinstein’s campaign account had less than $10,000 at the end of 2022, further fueling speculation about her retirement.
In her statement, Feinstein expressed gratitude to the people of California for allowing her to serve them and stated that, despite a divided Congress, it is still possible to pass bills that will improve people’s lives.
I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends. Even with a divided Congress, we can still pass bills that will improve lives.
