(TheRedAlertNews.com) – BREAKING NOW: A US drone strike eliminated an ISIS leader in eastern Syria on Friday, a fact later disclosed by the US Central Command on Sunday.
The attack involved the same three US MQ-9 Reaper drones that faced disturbances from Russian aircraft just the previous week. These drones were utilized in the mission against Usamah al-Muhajir, a high-ranking figure within the terrorist group, according to Central Command.
Gen. Michael Kurilla, a commander with Central Command, confirmed the US’s commitment to overcoming ISIS in the region. He stated, “We have made it clear that we remain committed to the defeat of ISIS throughout the region.”
Regarding civilian casualties, the agency noted, “There are no indications that any civilians were killed in this strike, and the coalition is assessing reports of a civilian injury.”
Central Command, however, did not clarify where exactly in Syria Al-Muhajir was killed, nor did they provide additional information about the mission.
The demise of Al-Muhajir followed an intensification of US attacks against ISIS leaders and operatives. In the wake of ISIS’s defeat in Syria in 2019, many of these officials fled across the Middle East. Some were arrested or killed in these strikes.
Though ISIS has considerably weakened since its peak in 2014, when it controlled a third of Iraq and Syria, the group still poses a significant threat in the region. The US Central Command has reiterated its dedication to tracking down and neutralizing any remaining leaders, many suspected of plotting international attacks.
This victorious strike was achieved amid a tense standoff between the US drones and Russian fighter jets over Syria, which occurred twice the previous week.
Air Force Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich gave an account of Thursday’s confrontation. Around 9:30 a.m. local time, Russian aircraft dropped a series of flares, flew perilously close, and jeopardized the safety of all aircraft involved.
This event transpired approximately 24 hours after Russian jets had deployed parachute flares, compelling the drones to initiate evasive maneuvers. In one instance, a Russian jet crossed paths with one of the drones, activating its afterburner. According to Grynkewich, this action diminished the operator’s capacity to control the aircraft securely.
