Virgil Thew has been apprehended by law enforcement, accused of the horrific murders of Elizabeth Kolba, 33, and two girls, aged 12 and 13, found shot to death on December 30.
The victims were discovered at Thew’s mother’s house in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, a situation that has left the community in shock.
The arrest was made in Elroy, just 12-13 miles from New Lisbon where the horrific events occurred.
Thew has been charged with three counts of first-degree intentional homicide.
According to reports, he was last seen on January 1, captured by a trail camera near New Lisbon.
Authorities, supported by the FBI and federal marshals, actively pursued Thew, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in upholding law and order.
Their efforts were also bolstered by the public’s input; authorities received over 172 tips regarding Thew’s whereabouts.
“We appreciate the public’s assistance in providing tips that contributed to the successful resolution of this matter,” the local police said.
The investigation commenced due to a missing child report in Monroe County on December 29, which quickly escalated into a homicide inquiry once the grim discovery was made.
The criminal complaint indicates that Thew was personally acquainted with the victims, adding another layer to the tragedy.
The Juneau County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest on Facebook, affirming the swift action taken to protect the community.
The successful apprehension of Thew was achieved “without incident,” stressing the competency and dedication of those involved.
“The New Lisbon Police Department and Juneau County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families affected by this tragic incident,” said New Lisbon Police chief Kyle Walker.
