(TheRedAlertNews.com) – In a colossal achievement for America at the Paris Olympics, swimmer Katie Ledecky etched her name into the annals of sports history, surpassing all others to become the foremost medal winner in women’s swimming.
Her accomplishment cements her status as the unparalleled G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) of her discipline, The New York Post reports.
At 27, Ledecky captured a silver medal in the women’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay.
This victory came on the heels of her gold medal triumph in the 1,500-meter event the previous day.
Ledecky’s overall medal tally now stands at 13, making her the most decorated female swimmer and the top American woman across all sports in terms of Olympic medals.
Prior to this, she shared the record with luminaries such as Jenny Thompson, Emma McKeon, and Dara Torres.
Although Ledecky aspired for gold in the relay event, she, along with her compatriots Claire Weinstein, Paige Madden, and Erin Gemmell, was outpaced by an Australian team spearheaded by Mollie O’Callaghan and Ariarne Titmus, both individual gold medalists.
Consequently, the American team secured the silver medal, while the Australian team clinched gold.
The defending Olympic champions from China finished the race in third place, taking home the bronze medal.
A native of Bethesda, Maryland, Ledecky now shares a unique distinction with Michael Phelps as one of the only swimmers in Olympic history to amass at least 13 medals.
Phelps, however, leads with an astounding total of 28 medals.
In the ongoing Paris Olympics, Ledecky has already added three medals to her collection.
Besides her recent silver, she also claimed bronze in the 400-meter freestyle—her fourth Olympic appearance.
Looking ahead, Ledecky is poised to compete in the 800-meter freestyle, an event in which she is the favorite.
Having previously clinched gold in this event in three successive Olympics—London, Rio, and Tokyo—another victory here would be historic.
It would position Ledecky alongside Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, with both athletes holding the record for the most gold medals—nine—by any female Olympian.
Moreover, Ledecky has expressed her intentions to compete in the upcoming 2028 Olympics set to be held in Los Angeles, indicating her commitment to continuing her illustrious career.
