In a presidential nomination acceptance speech that lasted almost 30 minutes – most of which was spent attacking President Donald Trump – it would’ve been easy to miss one of the most important and revealing parts of former Vice President Joe Biden’s diatribe.
Important because of the demands it would place on all Americans.
Revealing because of what it indicates about Biden.
If elected President of the United States, whether he has the power or not, Biden will order all Americans to wear a mask.
That is something Trump has refused to do, instead leaving it up to state governors or even local officials to decide based on state and local conditions when it comes to the spread of COVID-19.
Significantly, it’s frequently the left in America who claim Trump behaves like a tyrant – even a dictator. Yet, it is Biden who signaled in his speech that one of the first orders he would give as president will be to mandate that each and every American wear a mask.
Biden tried to wrap his desired mask mandate in the flag: “We’ll have a national mandate to wear a mask — not as a burden, but to protect each other,” Biden said. “It’s a patriotic duty.”
Importantly, if elected President, Biden will find out that his order may not be possible – as Trump has pointed out when it comes to Biden and his plan to mask all Americans.
“He wants the President of the United States, with the mere stroke of a pen, to order over 300 million American citizens to wear a mask for a minimum of three straight months … no matter where they live and no matter their surroundings,” Trump said in a press briefing. “He does not identify what authority the president has to issue such a mandate or how federal law enforcement could possibly enforce it or why we would be stepping on governors throughout our country, many of whom have done a very good job and they know what is needed.”
