In a shocking twist, the “innocent” Syrian prisoner dramatically “freed” on camera by CNN’s Clarissa Ward has been revealed as a notorious Assad regime torturer with a history of war crimes.
The liberal media giant initially presented the story as “one of the most extraordinary moments” in journalism, claiming to have liberated an innocent civilian from a secret Syrian prison.
However, independent fact-checkers quickly debunked CNN’s narrative, exposing yet another example of the mainstream media’s willingness to manipulate the truth for ratings.
Independent fact-checking organization Verify-Sy revealed that the man CNN portrayed as a helpless victim was actually Salama Mohammad Salama, also known as “Abu Hamza.”
Far from being an innocent detainee, Salama was a member of Bashar al-Assad’s forces with a dark history of alleged war crimes, including theft, extortion and the torture of civilians during the Syrian civil war.
CNN’s embarrassing misstep raises serious questions about the network’s journalistic integrity and its rush to push narratives without proper verification.
The prisoner initially claimed to be Adel Ghurbal and faked not knowing about Assad’s regime collapse.
Nonetheless, he was later identified through facial recognition software as a former intelligence officer for the Assad government.
Despite the clear inconsistencies in the prisoner’s appearance and behavior, which suggested he was not held in harsh conditions, CNN rushed to air the dramatic footage.
Local sources later revealed that Salama’s imprisonment was likely due to a fight over extorted money with a high-ranking officer, not political persecution as CNN said.
This is not the first time CNN has faced allegations of staging reports for dramatic effect.
The network previously came under fire for fabricating a scene near the Israel-Gaza border, though CNN denied those claims as well.
While CNN tries to deflect blame by citing the challenges of reporting in conflict zones, this incident underscores the network’s willingness to compromise journalistic standards for the sake of a compelling story.
