The legislation had bipartisan support, with numerous Republicans joining almost all Democrats in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate following recent massacres at a grocery store, an elementary school, a medical facility, and other mass shootings across the country.
Biden predicted the new law would save lives.
“I have been at this work for a long, long time. I know how hard it is. I was there 30 years ago the last time this nation passed meaningful gun safety laws,” Biden said. “While this bill doesn’t do everything I want, it does include actions I’ve long called for that will save lives.”
Biden added, “If we can reach compromise on guns, we should be able to reach compromise on other critical issues.”
Speaking of the families of the victims killed in recent mass shootings, Biden said, “They led the way so other families will not have the experience of pain and trauma that they had.”
