(TheRedAlertNews.com) – In a new embarrassment for a leftist administration, New York’s Democrat Mayor, Eric Adams, has announced that NYC Police Commissioner Edward Caban has stepped down from his position, a decision that comes amid a federal corruption investigation into Caban.
This announcement comes close on the heels of the FBI’s seizure of Caban’s personal devices amidst a federal investigation, The Hill reports.
Mayor Adams confirmed that he accepted Caban’s resignation that day.
“He concluded that this is the best decision at this time. I respect his decision and I wish him well,” Adams remarked, highlighting the decrease in crime rates during Caban’s leadership of the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
Caban decided to resign after recent events caused disruptions within the department, according to a report by The Associated Press.
“The news around recent developments … created a distraction for our department,” Caban expressed in an email to his colleagues.
He further emphasized his commitment to the department’s mission.
“I am unwilling to let my attention be on anything other than our important work, or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD,” he stated.
“I hold immense respect and gratitude for the brave officers who serve this department, and the NYPD deserves someone who can solely focus on protecting and serving New York City, which is why — for the good of this city and this department — I have made the difficult decision to resign as Police Commissioner,” he added in a statement to NBC New York.
His resignation occurred shortly after FBI agents searched his home and the homes of at least three top aides to Mayor Adams.
The NYPD had acknowledged its cooperation with the federal investigation earlier, but details remained scant.
The focus of the federal probe, led by the US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, has not been disclosed, and the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has not commented on the matter.
Last week, devices belonging to other city officials including First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks, and Timothy Pearson, an advisor to the mayor and former NYPD official, were also confiscated by the FBI, the AP disclosed, citing sources who requested anonymity.
Mayor Adams expressed his astonishment and seriousness regarding the ongoing investigations.
“I was as surprised as you to learn of these inquiries and I take them extremely seriously. I spent more than 20 years in law enforcement and so every member of the administration knows my expectations that we must follow the law,” he said.
