(TheRedAlertNews.com) – In what is probably a fair assessment, several Democrat senators have made it clear they are scared that former President Donald Trump may have stronger support among the American public than indicated by current polls.
In discussions with The Hill, published Monday, these senators stressed that the 2024 election will likely be tight, regardless of Trump’s current 2.2-point lag behind Vice President Kamala Harris, as per the RealClearPolitics average.
Notably, this gap is narrower compared to the leads Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton held at similar points in their campaigns.
“That’s ominous,” remarked one anonymous Democrat senator, commenting on Trump’s polling performance against Harris.
“There’s no question that is concerning, but you’re working as hard as you can work, no matter what. My sense there’s not a lot more you can do than we’re already doing,” the senator added.
This senator also suggested that an underestimation of Trump’s support might stem from voters feeling “embarrassed” to admit their preference.
“Most of what he preaches, most of us have taught our children to try to not be that way on the playground,” he explained, indicating a reluctance to openly support a candidate whose behavior they would not condone in their children.
Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) cautioned against relying on poll results, pointing out that polling credibility has declined since 2016.
“Polling has really been seriously damaged since 2016. And that’s one of the truths, is that Trump is going to be tough in Pennsylvania, and that’s absolutely the truth,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, Senator Raphael Warnock from Georgia highlighted the significance of the actual vote over pre-election polls.
“We know this election is going to be close. It’s going to be close in the battleground states, including Georgia, which is why I’m doing everything I can to make sure we put Georgia in our column. The only poll that matters is Nov. 5, right?” he stated.
Warnock further remarked on the inherent uncertainties in polling: “We talk about margin of error for a reason.”
Another senator, who requested anonymity, expressed skepticism about the current polls’ accuracy, noting a perception among some voters that Trump’s economic policies were successful.
“I’m surprised that people look back on the Trump economy delusionally as being so good, which I think is the major factor that supports his approval rating,” the senator observed.
According to RealClearPolitics, Trump and Harris are virtually tied in key battleground states, with no significant shifts in support following their September 10 debate.
