(TheRedAlertNews.com) – Having already made it clear that he will do everything in his power while he is Governor of California to ensure that no death row inmate is ever executed, Gavin Newsom is now starting the process of eliminating the state’s death row.
Instead, he wants it to be a “positive, healing environment.”
According to the Associated Press today:
“California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who three years ago placed a moratorium on executions, now is moving to dismantle the United States’ largest death row by moving all condemned inmates to other prisons within two years.
“The goal is to turn the section at San Quentin State Prison into a ‘positive, healing environment.’
“‘We are starting the process of closing death row to repurpose and transform the current housing units into something innovative and anchored in rehabilitation,’ corrections department spokeswoman Vicky Waters told The Associated Press.” [emphasis added]
It’s unclear at this point what the voters of Calfornia will make of this latest gambit by Newsom. The Associated Press notes that “California voters supported the death penalty in 2012 and 2016, though legislative opponents have said they hope to put the issue before voters again in coming years.”
With murders and other violent crimes increasing nationally, and in many California communities, voters may look dimly on Newsom’s elimination of a death row that many may want to be put in use once Newsom is out of office.
Time will tell if this move invigorates the Republican Party in California in future elections.
