Many are alarmed not only by the crime but also by the suspect’s status as an illegal immigrant.
The shocking details of Oscar’s death grimly highlight the failures of a system struggling to protect America’s youth.
Oscar Hernandez’s body was found in a ditch in a wooded area in Oxnard, Ventura County, five days after he was last seen with Garcia Aquino.
Evidence suggests that Oscar met his untimely end during a heinous crime reportedly involving lewd acts.
This gruesome discovery marks a horrifying twist in the San Fernando Valley case that has captured national attention.
L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, with the support of the LAPD and FBI, is investigating the murder.
The charges against Garcia Aquino include a special circumstance allegation of murder during the commission or attempted commission of lewd acts with a child, which could make him eligible for the death penalty.
L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman emphasized the intention to pursue justice: “These cases are tragic, and the Hernandez family, you have our deepest sympathy for a loss that words cannot even begin to describe. Our role, though, is to bring justice to this family and to hold the person responsible for these brutal, heinous, unspeakable, unthinkable acts, hold them accountable and prosecute and punish them to the full extent of the law.”
The accused, Garcia Aquino, hails from El Salvador and has been in the U.S. unlawfully, NBC News reports.
This detail raises concerns about border security and the vetting process for individuals who have access to children.
Authorities are calling for potential victims of Garcia Aquino to come forward, revealing that he is linked to other child sexual abuse cases.
L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna reassured, “There’s always a fear that there’s more victims, and we want to make sure we account for everybody that’s out there.”
Meanwhile, resources are available for victims of abuse, including the Crisis Text Line.
Oscar’s journey with soccer began through his participation in an after-school program, during which time he developed a relationship with his coach.
On March 28th, Oscar left his Sun Valley home to meet Garcia Aquino but tragically never returned.
His family, hopeful but plagued by unanswered calls and a misleading text, feared the worst.
Sheriff Luna has urged anyone with information to contact LAPD’s Juvenile Division or the Sheriff’s Special Victims Bureau, emphasizing that undocumented individuals should not fear coming forward.
