(TheRedAlertNews.com) – In a new public embarrassment for Kamala Harris, her campaign now claims that the Democrat nominee’s comments about shooting an intruder with her gun were just a “joke.”
Keisha Lance Bottoms, a key adviser for the Harris campaign, responded dismissively on Friday to the widespread attention drawn by Vice President Kamala Harris’s recent quip concerning her readiness to use a firearm against intruders.
The comment was made during a rally, and despite its light-hearted delivery, it quickly captured the public’s interest, National Review notes in a report.
During an event that was streamed live and featured Oprah Winfrey as host, Vice President Harris, while discussing her stance on gun ownership, remarked, “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot.”
Following a brief laugh, Harris admitted that perhaps she “should not” have made such a statement, but casually mentioned that her team could “deal with that later.”
“It was a joke, and she knew that we would still be talking about it today, but I think it’s important that people know that the vice president respects the right to bear arms, that she supports the Second Amendment, but she wants responsible gun ownership and she wants our communities to be safe,” explained Bottoms regarding the Vice President’s comments.
Bottoms, who previously served as the mayor of Atlanta, also suggested that such comments serve to “humanize” Vice President Harris.
Despite her lighthearted approach to the topic, Harris is under constant protection, given her residence on the premises of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., safeguarded by the Secret Service.
In a contrasting tone to her recent remarks, back in 2020, Vice President Harris openly criticized stand-your-ground laws.
These laws permit homeowners to use lethal force against intruders without the obligation to retreat.
She highlighted that such laws “have often and frequently been used as an excuse or cover for people who are motivated by racism and racial profiling . . . it has been used as an excuse to kill black and brown people and in particular black and brown young men.”
The revelation of Harris’s personal gun ownership was a surprise to many, including Oprah Winfrey, who expressed her astonishment during the interview.
This disclosure came shortly after Harris emphasized her ownership of a gun in a debate against former President Donald Trump the previous week.
