This marks the end of an era and raises questions about the future of the show and its next leader.
Lester Holt has announced he is leaving “NBC Nightly News” after a tenure marked by covering significant events such as the political rise of Donald Trump, the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the 2023 attack in Israel.
Since succeeding Brian Williams in 2015, Holt has become known as the “most-trusted television news personality in America.”
His weekly audience averages around 7 million viewers.
While his last broadcast date has not been set, Holt plans to stay until early summer before transitioning to a full-time role as anchor for “Dateline.”
Holt expressed his gratitude for his time at “Nightly News,” stating, “It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to work with each of you every day.”
Lester Holt has been a staple on “NBC Nightly News” since being named anchor in 2015 but was previously the weekend anchor since 2007 and also with “Weekend TODAY” for over 12 years, The Hill reports.
Janelle Rodriguez, an executive at NBC News, praised Holt, saying, “He’s earned deep respect and reverence from our newsroom, industry colleagues and, most importantly, viewers.”
His departure aligns with a broader trend of high-profile anchors stepping down, such as Hoda Kotb from “Today” and Chuck Todd from “Meet The Press.”
Holt started his journalism career in 1981, making significant stops at WBBM-TV in Chicago and WCBS-TV in New York, before joining NBC News in 2000.
He has collected various industry honors, including Emmy Awards and the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism, securing his place in the history of broadcast journalism.
As NBC searches for Holt’s successor, questions loom about the network’s direction and ability to maintain viewer trust and engagement.
The network, however, has yet to announce who will fill Holt’s shoes.
As the media landscape continues to shift, NBC has an opportunity to redefine its approach and cater to a viewership hungry for trustworthy news amid the ever-changing global climate.
“A smile comes to my face when I think that with ‘Nightly News,’ and ‘Dateline,’ I have now anchored two of the most successful and iconic television news programs in broadcast history,” Holt remarked, reflecting on his journey.
