(TheRedAlertNews.com) – In a pathetic, sickening new move by a notorious high-profile Democrat who deserves to be locked up, disgraced US Senator Bob Menendez, who is poised to resign on Tuesday over a corruption scandal and criminal conviction, is reportedly in discussions to secure a presidential pardon from Joe Biden.
Menendez is seeking the pardon before Biden concludes his term at year’s end, sources close to the former suggest, cited by The New York Post.
Last month, Menendez was convicted of 16 felony counts of bribery and corruption.
He was found guilty of accepting bribes, including cash and gold, exploiting his influential political position to benefit three businessmen along with the governments of Egypt and Qatar.
“He’s likely trying to get a pardon or a reduction in his sentence,” a political operative from New Jersey stated, preferring anonymity.
“Bob Menendez doesn’t do things without getting something back, and at this point I would think he would want to get out of the way to spare his kids the embarrassment, and maybe even help his wife,” the source added.
If sentenced today, Menendez could be facing over two centuries behind bars, with his sentencing scheduled for October.
Previously a contender as an independent in the upcoming November election, Menendez withdrew last week, effectively clearing the path for Democrat Andy Kim to pursue the vacated seat.
This decision to drop out was purportedly Menendez’s final leverage in negotiations. His continued candidacy had raised concerns among Democrats that he might fracture the party vote, potentially handing victory to Republican Curtis Bashaw.
Menendez’s wife, Nadine Arslanian, also faces charges of corruption and bribery, although her trial is indefinitely delayed due to her undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
Following his resignation announcement, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy appointed George Helmy, his former chief of staff, to temporarily take over Menendez’s Senate seat starting in September.
“The last-ditch efforts of Bob Menendez to try to secure a pardon by dropping out of a race he should never have been a part of and a last-minute resignation probably won’t be enough to get him out of jail,” remarked Thomas Anderson, director of the Last Government Watchdog.
Menendez’s son, Rep. Rob Menendez, has recently secured a win in the Democrat primary for his district’s Congressional seat, his campaign apparently unscathed by his father’s legal predicaments.
Menendez’s daughter, Alicia Menendez, continues her career as a broadcast journalist for MSNBC.
Despite his legal battles, Menendez and Arslanian have been frequently seen at their favorite local restaurant, Grissini’s, seemingly unconcerned about the ongoing issues.
