As anti-immigration protests and riots in England reached their fifth day, the situation escalated over the weekend with hundreds converging on a supposed migrant accommodation in Rotherham, a city known as the place where over a thousand underage white girls were repeatedly raped in a grooming ring by migrants in the 2000s.
Protestors targeted the Holiday Inn Express in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Sunday afternoon amid ongoing national turmoil triggered by the murder of three young British girls at a children’s dance party in Southport, allegedly committed by a teenager of Rwandan descent.
The hotel has been a previous site of demonstrations against accommodating alleged asylum seekers—potentially unauthorized boat migrants—at the expense of taxpayers.
Reports from The Telegraph indicated that the assembled crowd was heard chanting “Get them out.”
Videos circulating on social media depicted rioters hurling fire extinguishers and various objects at the retreating police forces, while some individuals were observed breaking into the hotel, which had already sustained partial fire damage, Breitbart News reports.
The unrest commenced nationwide on Saturday, predominantly affecting working-class areas traditionally supportive of the Labour Party, including cities like Bristol, Liverpool, and Manchester.
Rotherham, also a Labour bastion, is globally recognized for the notorious grooming gang scandal, where, shockingly, at least 1,400 girls—some as young as nine—were exploited by Pakistani child rape gangs for years.
During this period, local Labour council members and other officials notoriously ignored the abuse, fearing accusations of racism.
These protests represent a significant challenge for the newly-elected Labour Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer, who has been widely criticized for his ineffective management of the crisis.
In the absence of strong governmental leadership, there have been amplified demands from the left for drastic measures.
Lord Walney, the government’s independent adviser on political violence, proposed the implementation of coronavirus-style lockdown measures to suppress the riots.
On Sunday, former Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf advocated for military intervention to curb the anti-immigration protests.
“This pogrom against Muslims and People of Colour is going to cost lives unless these far-right thugs are stopped,” he stated in reaction to the violence at the Rotherham migrant hotel.
Furthermore, calls for Starmer to convene Parliament, which is currently in summer recess, have intensified, with prominent Conservatives like leadership candidate Priti Patel and former Conservative leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith voicing their concerns.
