Spearheaded by Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, the legislation seeks to honor Trump’s “remarkable accomplishments,” sparking both support and skepticism.
Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna of Florida introduced a bill aiming to add former President Donald Trump’s image to the iconic monument of Mount Rushmore.
Luna argues that Trump’s remarkable accomplishments and continued success merit such a historic recognition.
Her bill reflects the enduring loyalty to Trump within some factions of the GOP.
Former Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz expressed his support for the idea during a Fox News segment, commenting, “Hey, if there’s room up there, I think it’d be great.”
Yet, there remains skepticism over whether this proposal can actually pass in Congress, given it would require near-unanimous support from House Republicans and backing from Senate Democrats.
Former Trump White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany noted the irony of the proposal, especially after President Joe Biden halted the Mount Rushmore fireworks display.
McEnany commented on this irony, mentioning that a display featuring Trump’s face on Mount Rushmore would be epic, given the circumstances.
“I’m fascinated by this because that would be some sweet irony after President Joe Biden stopped the fireworks display from Mount Rushmore. So if you did like the 250th anniversary of the country at Mount Rushmore with President Trump’s face, it would be epic,” Kayleigh McEnany said, cited by Newsweek.
Though adding a president to Mount Rushmore is not without precedent in terms of proposal, the difficulty lies in achieving bipartisan support in today’s divisive political climate.
The idea of adding Trump’s face has elicited mixed reactions, with some Republicans even questioning the merit of his achievements for such an honor.
Other suggestions for honoring Trump include placing his face on banknotes or naming buildings after him.
Trump himself has been hesitant to express open desire for the Mount Rushmore honor due to potential backlash.
He reportedly said in 2020, “If I answer that question, ‘Yes,’ I will end up with such bad publicity.”
While Luna’s proposal may face an uphill battle, it underscores the profound discussions around Trump’s legacy and how history might choose to honor his presidency.
