The legendary Major League Baseball hit king succumbed to hypertensive cardiovascular disease and diabetes at the age of 83, as confirmed by the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner.
Pete Rose, a name synonymous with baseball greatness, passed away on Monday at his Las Vegas home.
The Coroner, Melanie Rouse, determined the cause of death as hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with diabetes mellitus being a contributing factor.
This revelation publicly sealed the final chapter of Rose’s storied life, blending both triumph and scandal.
The icon spent 24 illustrious seasons (1963-1986) with the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Montreal Expos, carving an indelible mark in Major League Baseball history.
Despite a lifetime ban in 1989 for gambling on games, Rose’s career accomplishments hold a formidable place in the sport’s annals.
His list of achievements includes being a National League MVP in 1973 and World Series MVP in 1975.
“Our hearts are deeply saddened by the news of Pete’s passing,” Bob Castellini, Reds Principal Owner and Managing Partner said.
“He was one of the fiercest competitors the game has ever seen, and every team he played for was better because of him,” Castellini added, cited by WIVB.
The Cincinnati Reds expressed their condolences, emphasizing Rose’s unparalleled competitive nature.
As he fought battles on the field, his struggle with health issues was more private.
Although there were no prior reports of serious illness, 2018 court filings indicated his declining health, involving poor mobility, dependence on blood thinners, and undergoing three heart procedures in five years.
In a final interview, Rose conveyed his deep regret over his actions, stating, “There’s nothing I can change about the history of Pete Rose. I keep convincing myself or telling myself ‘Hang in there, Pete, you’ll get a second chance.’”
Despite the ban, his career is honored in the Baseball Hall of Fame through various memorabilia, showcasing the undeniable impact he had on the game.
“Major League Baseball extends its deepest condolences to Pete Rose’s family, his friends across the game, and the fans of his hometown of Cincinnati, Philadelphia and beyond who admired his greatness, grit and determination on the field of play. May he rest in peace,” the league said in a statement on Rose’s passing.
Rose’s legendary status remains intact; he’s MLB’s hits leader with 4,256 hits, a 17-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove winner, and three-time World Series champion.
The day before his death, Rose spent time with fellow members of the Reds World Series champions of 1975 and 1976, a fitting closure to a remarkable journey.
