(TheRedAlertNews.com) – As though he hadn’t disgraced the GOP enough with his previous anti-Trump stances, former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney has gone fully rogue by announcing his support for Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the upcoming November election.
Cheney’s endorsement came shortly after his daughter, former US Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), disclosed at an event in Texas that her father would vote for Harris.
In his official statement, Cheney, who served under former President George W. Bush, emphasized the importance of upholding the Constitution beyond party lines.
“In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again,” he stated.
“As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris,” Cheney added, cited by The Hill.
Liz Cheney, a key figure on the House select committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, events at the US Capitol, first shared this information with Mark Leibovich of The Atlantic at the Texas Tribune Festival.
Earlier in the week, she too affirmed her support for Harris, despite her long-standing conservative values.
The Wyoming congresswoman, one of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump following the January 6 events, lost her seat in the 2022 midterms to US Rep. Harriet Hageman (R), who received Trump’s endorsement.
Before the election, Dick Cheney condemned Trump in a campaign advertisement, decrying him as a coward for not accepting his electoral defeat.
“In our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Cheney declared in the ad.
“He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He is a coward. A real man wouldn’t lie to his supporters. He lost his election, and he lost big. I know it. He knows it, and deep down, I think most Republicans know,” he said further.
Last week, Liz Cheney reiterated her support for Harris during a talk at Duke University, highlighting the critical nature of this year’s elections for those in swing states.
When asked for a comment, Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, dismissively inquired, “Who’s Liz Cheney?”
