The recall involves over 2,400 pounds of pet food, posing a serious health threat to pets and humans.

This recall includes “Kitten Mix” and “Puppy Mix,” identified by lot numbers N26 0114 and N25 1230, respectively.

Distributed in two-pound bags, these products were sold between January 3 and January 24, 2025, across several states such as Connecticut, Maryland, and New York.

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets discovered the contamination after investigating a customer complaint.

Products found with salmonella and listeria contamination raise significant concerns.

Pets consuming these foods might exhibit lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea, while humans handling the food risk serious symptoms, including fever and abdominal pain.

The FDA recommends disposing of the affected pet food, deeply sanitizing any surfaces in contact with it, and thoroughly washing hands to avoid further contamination.

In cases involving outbreaks, “Salmonella and Listeria can affect animals eating the products, and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands,” as noted in the recall alert.

This incident underscores the critical need for vigilant oversight in food production, ensuring pet owners can trust the safety of their pets’ diet.

“Salmonella and Listeria can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” reads the recall alert.

Producing safe pet food is a fundamental responsibility of companies like Blue Ridge Beef.

Such contamination risks compromise this obligation, not only to pets but also to the humans in their homes.

Anyone with impacted products should get rid of them immediately and clean everything that might have come into contact with this pet food.

The FDA’s voluntary recall of these foods after positive tests for dangerous bacteria highlights potential gaps in monitoring pet food safety and the serious implications of neglecting such oversight.

As consumers, maintaining pressure on these companies to uphold higher standards is essential to safeguard both human and animal health.
