Steve Mensch, president and general manager of Tyler Perry Studios, died in a plane crash in Homosassa, Florida, about 60 miles north of Tampa.
The crash involved a single-engine Vans RV-12IS plane registered to him.
Investigations by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are ongoing to determine the cause of this tragic incident.
Mensch was an influential advocate for Georgia’s film industry, contributing over $1 billion in film tax credits.
His efforts have been instrumental in transforming Georgia into a major hub for film and television production. He played a significant role in marketing Georgia ahead of the 1996 Summer Olympics and helped launch the Georgia Production Partnership.
Tyler Perry hired Mensch in 2016 to create and manage Tyler Perry Studios.
Under his leadership, the studio flourished, and his vision was vital in establishing Atlanta as a premier destination for global film production.
He was also involved in opening Third Rail Studios in Atlanta, showcasing his dedication to expanding the industry.
“We are incredibly saddened by the passing of our dear friend Steve Mensch. Steve was a cherished member of our team… We will miss him dearly. Our heart goes out to his family” said Tyler Perry Studios, cited by Fox 5 Atlanta.
Many leaders have expressed their condolences.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp recognized Mensch as an instrumental figure in enhancing Georgia’s film opportunities.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens mourned the loss of a trusted friend and supporter of the city’s entertainment sector.
Mensch’s death coincided with the release of Tyler Perry’s film “The Six Triple Eight,” shot at the Atlanta studio he helped build.
He is survived by his wife, Danila, and three children, who now bear the weight of this unimaginable loss.
“I’ve been trying to understand this tragedy all day—what went wrong with that plane. Steve loved flying… I’m praying for his family as we all try to make sense of this heartbreak,” Perry stated further.
