Pro-Life Groups Approve?!

( – In a somewhat surprising sign of conservative consolidation, anti-abortion organizations have endorsed the GOP’s official platform for 2024 even though it no longer supports a federal abortion ban, and they had previously cautioned former President Trump’s campaign against diluting the stance on abortion.

These groups praised specific wording related to the 14th Amendment, which was approved by a panel of the Republican National Committee (RNC) on Monday, following months of intense lobbying efforts.

The platform reflects Trump’s preference for delegating abortion regulation to individual states, without advocating for constitutional rights for embryos or fetuses or supporting a national abortion ban, The Hill reports.

Influential anti-abortion leaders had argued that weakening the platform would signify a retreat from the substantial progress made in restricting abortion access and could potentially fragment the party at a time when unity is essential.

Historically, the Republican Party’s platform has consistently opposed abortion and favored a national prohibition.

This revision is the first since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and anti-abortion advocates were keen to leave their imprint.

In 2016, the platform supported “a human life amendment to the Constitution and legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to children before birth.”

It opposed any public funding for abortion services or organizations such as Planned Parenthood and advocated for a national abortion ban after approximately 20 weeks of pregnancy.

However, reflecting a shift perhaps influenced by the Trump campaign’s strategic considerations, the current platform does not commit to specific restrictions but instead acknowledges the states’ autonomy to enact laws related to the 14th Amendment rights.

“After 51 years, because of us, that power has been given to the States and to a vote of the People. We will oppose Late Term Abortion, while supporting mothers and policies that advance Prenatal Care, access to Birth Control, and IVF (fertility treatments),” the platform declares.

Despite the focus on state-level autonomy, anti-abortion groups emphasize the importance of the 14th Amendment language.

“It is important that the GOP reaffirmed its commitment to protect unborn life today through the 14th Amendment. Under this amendment, it is Congress that enacts and enforces its provisions. The Republican Party remains strongly pro-life at the national level,” stated Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

Last week, Dannenfelser had expressed concerns that altering the 2016 platform “would be a miscalculation that would hurt party unity and destroy pro-life enthusiasm between now and the election.”

Kristan Hawkins, President of Students for Life of America, remarked that the explicit reference to 14th Amendment protections is “the most significant contribution that the GOP platform makes for life.”
