(TheRedAlertNews.com) – With Kamala Harris’s advent on the 2024 election stage, the Democrats are no longer hiding their extreme agenda for 2025 if their candidate wins, as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has declared they would work to abolish the filibuster, thus paving the way for the passage of far-left legislation.
Schumer (D-NY) has declared that Democrats will prioritize bypassing the Senate filibuster to enact voting rights legislation if they maintain the presidency and Senate and regain the House in the upcoming November elections, The Hill reports.
Schumer previously sought to create an exception to the Senate’s filibuster rule, which mandates 60 votes to conclude debate and proceed to a bill’s final vote, for passing voting rights legislation in January 2022.
However, this effort was thwarted by two centrist Democrats, Sen. Joe Manchin (WV) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (AZ), both of whom will retire at year’s end.
“One of the first things we want to do is what we did first last time, but I think we’ll have more success and that’s democracy, dealing with voting rights, dealing with Citizens United, dealing with reapportionment,” Schumer articulated during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
He emphasized campaign finance reform and the extreme gerrymandering of congressional districts as primary concerns.
Schumer disclosed his extensive efforts to unite his Senate Democratic Conference behind targeted filibuster reform to counteract voting restrictions imposed by multiple states following the 2020 election.
The voting rights bill he aimed to advance two years prior would have implemented uniform national standards for ballot access, automatic voter registration, and declared Election Day a national holiday.
Although Schumer attempted to modify the Senate’s filibuster rule to enable passage by a simple majority, his plan was frustrated by Manchin and Sinema.
Reflecting on his initial proposal to amend part of the filibuster rule, Schumer revealed, “There were probably 35 Democrats who were willing to change the rules on that issue. We got it up to 48. Of course, Sinema and Manchin voted no. … Well they’re both gone.”
He noted that Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), who is running for Sinema’s Senate seat, supports filibuster reform to pass voting rights and other democracy-related legislation.
Manchin is expected to be succeeded by Jim Justice, the Republican Governor of West Virginia.
Additionally, Schumer outlined several other legislative priorities.
A key focus is addressing the implications of the 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC, which enabled unlimited electoral spending by corporations and outside groups.
In response, Democrats support the Disclose Act, mandating that organizations involved in electoral spending—including super PACs and advocacy groups under section 501(c)4—promptly disclose donors contributing $10,000 or more during an election cycle.
