There seems to be an alarming increase of violent criminals attacking police by ambushing them with gunfire.
For example, in Arizona “police are searching for a suspect following an apparent ambush involving an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper in Phoenix,” according to Fox 10 Phoenix.
“DPS officials say the suspect drove up to troopers while a teen sitting in the passenger’s seat attempted to shoot them with an assault rifle.”
“DPS officials say the shooting was unprovoked; the suspects targeted the detectives and fired first. The detectives happened to be in the area to provide support for other troopers who were conducting a separate investigation.”
“‘Had the trooper not had the wherewithall and the ability to quickly exit his vehicle and engage the suspect, undoubtedly, he would have been shot or killed,’ said Col. Silbert.”
“The 17-year-old suspected shooter, identified as Luis German Espinoza Acuña, was taken into custody.”
In another potential ambush, this time in Aurora, Colorado, “an investigation is underway in Aurora after officers were possibly targeted with gunfire during a traffic stop,” according to Fox 31 Denver.
“According to Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson, the officers had stopped a vehicle in the 13600 block of East Iliff Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when they heard multiple gunshots.”
“An investigation and search in the area led police to a suspect vehicle and eventually a juvenile male suspect who was arrested and charged for possession of a gun as a juvenile.”
“‘Obviously, this has caused grave concern that our officers may have been targeted last night. This investigation is a priority, and should it reveal our officers were targeted we will be pursuing prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. We will not tolerate our officers being targeted, nor should our community,’ Wilson said in a statement emailed to FOX31.”
Notice that in both of the above cases the shooters are teenagers. This also seems to be a disturbing trend when it comes to violence directed at police officers.
