This move, sanctioned by Mexico’s Senate, is integral to countering the enduring threat posed by organized crime and cartel violence.
From February 17 to March 30, 2025, U.S. Special Forces will train Mexican marine infantry troops in Campeche, Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum requested this mission, which was approved by a Senate commission, despite her previous opposition to U.S. military operations on Mexican soil.
The training encompasses conventional and non-conventional combat to prepare Mexican forces for diverse threats.
Leading this initiative, the 7th Special Forces Group brings decades of experience in unconventional warfare and has been actively involved in other Latin American locations.
Eleven Green Berets, equipped with their weapons and equipment, will provide hands-on training.
Their expertise in precision combat, reconnaissance, and counterinsurgency will significantly boost the capabilities of the Mexican Marine Infantry, a crucial segment of Mexico’s national defense forces.
Strategically, the training mission aligns with a broader agreement between the U.S. and Mexico to tackle drug cartels and related security threats.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has emphasized the conditional nature of American involvement, stating that the U.S. reserves the right to act if Mexico is unable to curb cartel activities.
This statement underscores the stakes involved in this operation, where successful collaboration could lead to a “much safer country” as former border czar Tom Homan envisions.
Such collaborations aim to bolster regional stability and military readiness while addressing mutual security concerns, including drug cartels, human rights abuses, and potential foreign influence.
The Mexican Marine Infantry’s enhanced skills will play a pivotal role in safeguarding national security and mitigating cartel networks that have long plagued the region.
However, this partnership’s success hinges on balancing cooperation with respect for national sovereignty.
“We want them to secure their own territory and sovereignty, but we reserve the right – should there not be an ability to police international and violent cartels – to protect our own sovereignty as well. We hope Mexico will step up. We expect they will,” Hegseth said, cited by the Latin Times.
This dynamic mission marks a pivotal moment not just for U.S.-Mexico military relations, but also for addressing the broader landscape of security challenges facing the two nations.
