(TheRedAlertNews.com) – Asserting a new power over NYC, President Trump has decisively quashed New York City’s contentious congestion pricing plan, delighting opponents and derailing what many saw as an overreach into American personal freedoms.

On February 19, 2025, the Federal Highway Administration officially revoked the program’s approval, labeling it both “backward and unfair.”

Trump celebrated this significant victory on Truth Social, proclaiming that “Congestion pricing is dead. Manhattan, and all of New York, is saved. Long Live The King!”

His administration—which revoked the plan aimed at reducing traffic through driver tolls—argued its cancellation would revive New York City’s crippled economic activity after the disastrous imposition of a $9 toll on most cars entering lower Manhattan.

The Manhattan plan, launched in January, was highly contested.

The U.S. Department of Transportation, led by Secretary Sean Duffy, communicated to Governor Kathy Hochul about terminating the program.

Duffy stated in his communication that such measures were a “slap in the face to working class Americans and small business owners.”

Many New York City dwellers initially opposed the congestion pricing program, and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy continuously criticized it, labeling it “a disaster for working and middle-class commuters and residents.”

Seeking intervention, Murphy petitioned the federal government for the program’s halt, finding relief in this decision, The New York Post reports.

This ruling doesn’t come without friction.

The MTA has filed a legal challenge against this revocation, with MTA Chair Janno Lieber stating, “Today, the MTA filed papers in federal court to ensure that the highly successful program—already dramatically reducing congestion—will continue despite this baseless effort to snatch those benefits away.”

Governor Hochul has also vowed to address this reversal at the National Governors Association meeting.

Resistance to this revocation runs high in some quarters.

Critics within the Biden administration initially approved the congestion pricing plan as part of the “Value Pricing Pilot Program.”

One of the original purposes was to fund the city’s vital transit system serving four million daily commuters.

Now, the MTA’s significant project funding rests in precarious limbo due to potential legal chaos.

Nevertheless, the Trump administration’s decision echoes the fundamental right of American citizens to travel freely without undue governmental interference or crippling financial burdens.
