In his post on Sunday, the GOP presidential candidate expressed his greetings with “Happy Birthday Mary!” and shared a significant image of “Our Lady of Guadalupe.”
This portrayal holds deep significance for Catholics, particularly in Mexico, due to historical visions reported by Juan Diego, an Aztec man, in 1531.
According to accounts, Mary appeared to Diego multiple times, asking for a shrine in her honor on Tepayac Hill, now part of Mexico City.
When Diego communicated Mary’s request to his bishop, the bishop demanded a sign.
Diego later met with Mary again, who directed him to collect roses.
Upon presenting these to the bishop and opening his cloak, numerous roses fell and revealed Mary’s image imprinted on the fabric, an event Catholics deem miraculous and a symbol of Mary’s nurturing presence in the Americas.
This is the image Trump posted, revered by visitors to the Basilica of Guadalupe.
Trump’s tribute occurred shortly after his announcement of “Catholics for Trump,” a group his campaign claims is devoted to preserving religious freedom and familial values.
The campaign asserted, “Under President Trump’s leadership, our nation witnessed unprecedented support for religious freedom, with significant victories both domestically and globally.”
They highlighted Trump’s efforts to protect faith-based organizations and defend them from government intrusion.
In contrast to the current Biden-Harris administration, which the campaign criticizes for eroding these freedoms, Trump’s efforts are described as staunchly supportive of Catholic values.
“President Trump knows the significance of ensuring religious freedom for all, and unlike Kamala Harris, he also knows the true power of faith and will never take away our God-given rights,” the release stated, emphasizing the coalition’s role in representing Catholic beliefs and ethics to the nation.
Recent polling by EWTN News/RealClear Opinion Research shows Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of Trump among Catholic voters, with 50% supporting Harris and 43% backing Trump.
Amidst this political backdrop, figures like CatholicVote President Brian Burch have expressed strong opposition to Harris.
“Kamala Harris hates Catholics and everything we hold sacred. We can’t pretend otherwise. Our institutions, families, culture and belief in the sanctity of all human life are the antithesis of her vision for America. Donald Trump and J.D Vance — and now RFK — are the antidote to the ruling class that has destroyed our country,” Burch stated.
