As President Trump makes the bold move to reinstate the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, many wonder if this action will go down as a turning point in U.S. foreign policy.

The designation is a strategic attempt to cut off resources to these Iranian-backed rebels. Could this be the key to securing maritime trade routes in the Red Sea?

This move reverses President Biden’s decision to strip the Houthis of this status due to humanitarian concerns shortly after taking office.

Under Trump’s administration, the Houthis were initially designated in January 2021, and the re-designation aims to protect American allies and secure critical maritime trading routes, ABC News reports.

Upon reversing the FTO tag, the Houthis escalated attacks on U.S. Navy vessels, partner nations’ infrastructures, and commercial ships in the critical Bab al-Mandeb strait.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been tasked with reviewing this designation’s impact within 30 days and taking action within 15 days following his report.

He’s expected to support and proceed with this designation, emphasizing the need for a strong response to the Houthis’ threats.

“This order sets in motion a process by which Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, shall be considered for designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization,” the executive order says.

In instructions from it, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is required to terminate projects and relationships with entities financially supporting the Houthis.

This action underlines the comprehensive approach to weaken the rebels’ operations and aligns with President Trump’s Middle Eastern strategic objectives.

The U.S. policy now focuses on cooperating with regional partners to eliminate the Houthis’ operational capabilities, ensuring stability in the area.

There are concerns that humanitarian aid to Yemen could be affected due to the stringent designation.

However, Yemeni officials and U.S. lawmakers argue the renewed FTO label will deter the Houthis and cut off their financial networks.

Meanwhile, the Houthis’ shift in tactics signifies the effectiveness of this decisive U.S. policy move.

While they initially seized ships like the ‘Galaxy Leader,’ the rebels have since released the crew, signaling a potential deterrent impact of the stricter designation.

America’s continued cooperation with its allies underscores the comprehensive commitment to dismantle the resources and capabilities of this group and protect vital global trade routes.
