With travelers in disarray and shattered glass lining the scene, many questions about safety remain unanswered.
A shooting incident occurred outside Chicago O’Hare International Airport near Terminal 2 following an altercation among multiple individuals.
The conflict, starting as a regular fight, escalated when a firearm was drawn.
Shots rang out, hitting a 25-year-old man twice in the lower body, who was later admitted to Lutheran General Hospital in stable condition.
The incident unfolded around 12:54 a.m. on a Wednesday morning. Witnesses reported hearing rapid gunfire followed by a series of single shots, as crowds fled for safety.
“During the altercation, shots were fired and a 25-year-old male victim sustained two gunshot wounds to the lower body,” confirmed law enforcement.
A bullet hole was discovered in a window of Terminal 2, with debris strewn on the street.
Police recovered several rifle rounds and dozens of shell casings at the scene, prompting an extensive law enforcement response that lasted at least four hours.
Witnesses from a nearby hotel corroborated hearing shots and observing people scattering in fear.
“They start fighting, regular fighting, after that they [go] in the car, they bring the gun and then start shooting,” said an eyewitness named Mahmoud, cited by Fox News.
By 5:15 a.m., authorities had reopened the lower-level arrival area, allowing normal operations to resume.
Construction crews worked to board up and repair windows damaged by the gunfire.
Despite the chaos, the efficient response of law enforcement contained the threat and ensured the safety of the traveling public.
Police are interviewing a second individual connected to the incident, yet they have not disclosed any possible motives or confirmed if the parties involved were previously acquainted.
Area Five detectives are persistently conducting the investigation, while also examining a suspicious white BMW parked near Terminal 1.
“I was terrified, so I honestly, these ear plugs saved my life. Getting up would have made me more scared and put me in a worse scenario, so I’m just really grateful to be alive right now,” said eyewitness Raquel Barajas, cited by ABC7.
