Video: Schumer Goes On The Attack To Pass Voting Rights Legislation

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY)

( – Breaking Now: With a blistering speech on the floor of the United States Senate Chamber in Washington, DC, (see a partial video below) Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), at times flashing anger, attacked Republicans for using the time-honored filibuster to stop him, President Joe Biden, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from enacting federal voting rights legislation designed to override state voting rights laws passed by Republican legislatures in Florida, Georgia, Texas, and several other Republican-controlled states.

Angry that Congress has been unable to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act because the Democrats can’t muster 60 votes to override the GOP filibuster, Schumer threatened to cast the filibuster aside.

As you’ll see in the video below, Schumer defended his argument to do away with the filibuster in order to pass the voting rights bills by stating:

“I ask my colleagues to consider this question. If the right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy, then how can we Democrats permit a situation in which Republicans can pass voter suppression laws at the state level with only a simple majority vote but not allow the United States Senate to do the same? And I ask that of my Democratic colleagues – my Democratic colleagues. This asymmetry cannot hold. If Senate Republicans continue to abuse the filibuster to prevent this body from acting, then the Senate must adapt.”

Do you agree or disagree with Schumer’s intent to cast aside the filibuster rule in an attempt to pass federal voting rights laws that could supersede those of the individual states?
