GOP Campaign HALTED: Daughter Murdered

Red stamp with the words VIOLENT CRIME
CHILLING CRIME

A Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate’s campaign came to an abrupt halt after his 22-year-old daughter was found stabbed to death in her St. Cloud apartment, with her own husband now facing second-degree murder charges in what authorities believe was a botched murder-suicide attempt.

Story Snapshot

  • Hallie Marie Tobler, 22, was found fatally stabbed with multiple wounds to her chest, back, head, and neck in her St. Cloud apartment on February 7, 2026
  • Her husband, Dylan Michael Tobler, 23, was charged with second-degree murder and is being held on $3 million bail after being found with self-inflicted injuries at the scene
  • Jeff Johnson, Hallie’s father and former St. Cloud City Council member, immediately suspended his Republican gubernatorial campaign to focus on his grieving family
  • Dylan Tobler faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted, with his next court appearance scheduled for February 23

Tragic Discovery Ends Political Aspirations

Jeff Johnson announced his candidacy for Minnesota governor in May 2025, running on a platform focused on eliminating taxpayer fraud and supporting federal deportation efforts for illegal immigrants. The former two-term St. Cloud City Council member had positioned himself as a conservative voice willing to tackle tough issues, including his controversial 2017 proposal to ban refugee resettlement in St. Cloud.

That campaign ended abruptly on February 10, 2026, when Johnson suspended his gubernatorial bid following the devastating loss of his daughter, Hallie Marie Tobler, who was discovered stabbed to death three days earlier in her south-central St. Cloud apartment.

Husband Charged After Failed Murder-Suicide

Dylan Michael Tobler was charged with second-degree murder after police discovered his wife’s body in the bathroom of their apartment on the 3100 block of 40th Avenue South. A witness knocked on the apartment door for 15 minutes before finding it unlocked from the inside, ultimately discovering Hallie dead and Dylan in the living room with apparent self-inflicted injuries.

The Midwest Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide caused by multiple stab wounds. During a police interview, Dylan reportedly acknowledged the situation, stating “It’s a mess” and predicting he would end up in jail, according to court documents.

Questions Surround Timeline and Warning Signs

Authorities indicate Hallie had last been in contact with others prior to February 3, with no communication received between February 3 and February 7 when her body was discovered. The exact date of the stabbing remains unclear, as investigators describe it occurring within “the past several days” before the discovery.

Court records reveal Dylan Tobler had pleaded guilty to a petty misdemeanor just days before the tragedy, on January 27, 2026, receiving a $150 fine. After being hospitalized for his self-inflicted injuries, Dylan was medically cleared and made his first court appearance on February 10, where bail was set between $1.5 million and $3 million.

Conservative Community Mourns Family Tragedy

The Minnesota Republican Party announced Johnson’s campaign suspension, with GOP Chair Alex Plechash expressing that his “heart goes out” to the Johnson family amid these horrific circumstances. Former St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis, a political colleague of Johnson, described the loss as “unbelievable heartbreaking” and recalled Johnson’s devotion to his family.

This tragedy represents not just a personal catastrophe for the Johnson family but also removes a conservative voice from Minnesota’s gubernatorial race at a time when the state needs principled leadership.

Johnson had been positioning himself as a candidate willing to take on issues that other politicians avoided, particularly regarding immigration enforcement and fiscal responsibility—positions that resonated with conservative voters frustrated by years of progressive policies.

Dylan Tobler remains in Stearns County Jail awaiting his next hearing on February 23. If convicted of second-degree murder, he faces up to 40 years in prison.

The Johnson family, including Jeff’s wife Julie, who was noted for her deep love of their daughter, now faces the dual burden of grief and the legal proceedings ahead. The campaign suspension is indefinite, with no indication whether Johnson might consider resuming his gubernatorial bid in the future.
