That cloud-first approach is not new. What changed recently is the fallback option. Amazon confirmed in March 2025 that it would end a feature letting some devices process voice commands locally, meaning speech never left the household.
Reporting at the time noted the shift applied to Echo speakers, smart displays, and Fire TV units alike, tied directly to Alexa’s generative AI expansion.
Where The Recordings Go And Who Can See Them
Amazon has told lawmakers plainly that voice recordings and transcripts stick around until customers delete them themselves.
In a 2019 letter to Senator Chris Coons, the company stated it retains that data by default, not for a fixed window, but indefinitely absent user action. That policy has not been walked back; it underpins how Alexa+ handles Fire TV requests today.
Amazon frames this as a feature, not a flaw. Its Alexa Privacy Hub lets users view, listen to, and delete voice history, and its help pages promise automatic deletion for anyone who opts out of saving recordings at all.
Those controls are real and functional. But they require the user to find the menu, understand the setting, and actively act, rather than assuming privacy by default.
The Fire TV Settings Amazon Does Offer
Separate from Alexa’s voice pipeline, Amazon’s Fire TV privacy FAQ lists specific opt-outs. Owners can turn off device usage data collected for marketing, block Amazon from tracking which apps they open and for how long, and disable interest-based advertising tied to the device’s ad identifier.
These toggles live under Settings, then Preferences, then Privacy Settings, and Amazon says most can also be managed from an account’s online privacy dashboard.
None of those settings, however, stop Alexa+ from sending voice requests to the cloud once a wake word fires. They govern behavioral tracking and advertising, a different data stream than the audio processing that makes the assistant work.
Users who disable ad tracking may still assume their spoken commands are similarly contained, when they are not.
Why Researchers Say The Bigger Pattern Matters
Academic research on smart speakers has repeatedly found that the sharpest user anxiety isn’t about the device recording at all, since most people accept that tradeoff for convenience.
It’s about not knowing how long recordings sit on a server or who besides the company might hear them, a concern that predates Alexa+ but grows louder every time a platform pushes more processing into the cloud. Free features tend to arrive alongside expanded data flows, not reduced ones.
That pattern deserves plain scrutiny rather than panic. Amazon has not hidden its retention practices; it has published them, along with deletion tools, for years. The fair criticism is that a free upgrade should not quietly narrow the local-processing options that once existed.
Consumers should expect Amazon to make the cloud-routing tradeoff obvious at setup, not buried in a settings submenu months later.
