GOP to Biden: Don’t Do It!

Joe Biden

(TheRedAlertNews.com) – In one of the most important warnings he’s ever going to get, House Republicans have cautioned President Joe Biden not to federalize the Texas National Guard – as the GOP-led administration of the Lone Star State has been doing the US government’s job in securing the Southern Border.

A group of 24 House Republicans gave the president a warning about the risks of federal intervention in the Texas National Guard as Texas intensifies its efforts to address the spike in illegal immigration.

They argue that such a move would breach constitutional boundaries, The Washington Examiner reports.

In their letter, the GOP lawmakers urged Biden to resist the pressure from Democratic legislators advocating for the federal government to assume command of the Texas National Guard amidst a controversy surrounding the management of the Southern Border.

Spearheaded by Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX), these Republicans contend that federalizing the Texas National Guard would contradict the Constitution, advocating instead for collaboration with Texas Republicans to fortify border security.

“By deploying the National Guard, Governor Abbott has taken the necessary steps to defend this country and her people from foreign invaders. To that end, we urge you to reconsider any inclination toward federalizing the National Guard in Texas,” the lawmakers stated.

“Any attempt to usurp command of the Texas National Guard using the authorities under the Insurrection Act of 1807 would be unconstitutional; the federal government’s supremacy clause does not extend to preventing States from taking due measures to protect and defend themselves in the face of crisis,” they elaborated.

This letter is a direct response to Democratic legislators’ appeals for Biden to take control of the Texas National Guard following the Guard’s takeover of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass last month—a move executed despite opposition from federal law enforcement.

Shelby Park has emerged as a major entry point for illegal immigrants entering the United States.

This action by Republican Governor Greg Abbott was in retaliation to a Supreme Court verdict favoring the Biden administration’s request to dismantle razor wire along the Rio Grande, which, according to the administration, hindered the federal border officials’ operations.

Abbott instructed the state National Guard to maintain their position, igniting a dispute with the federal government over the jurisdiction of border security policies within the state.

“Federalizing Texas troops would be an encroachment on Texas’ constitutionally protected sovereignty,” the GOP legislators wrote to Biden.
