Calculated Deception and Cross-Country Murder Plot
Ashlee Buzzard, 40, orchestrated an elaborate scheme to murder her daughter, using rental cars, disguises, and fake license plates during a multi-state journey. Surveillance footage captured Ashlee and Melodee wearing wigs as they left Lompoc, California in a rented white Chevrolet Malibu.
Investigators tracked the pair through Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska, with Ashlee changing wigs throughout the trip and using a New York license plate at one point.

School District Exposes Missing Child Case
The Lompoc Unified School District reported Melodee missing in mid-October, stating the child had not been seen since August. When authorities confronted Ashlee about her daughter’s whereabouts, she refused to cooperate and could not explain Melodee’s absence.
The last confirmed sighting occurred on October 9 when security cameras captured the mother-daughter pair on the Colorado-Utah border, shortly before investigators believe the murder took place.
Federal Evidence Links Mother to Murder
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives investigators connected ballistic evidence from the Utah crime scene to Ashlee’s California home.
An expended cartridge case recovered from the Buzzard residence matched ammunition found in the rental car and at the rural Utah location where Melodee’s decomposed body was discovered. The child had sustained gunshot wounds to the head, and DNA analysis on December 22, 2025, confirmed the remains belonged to Melodee.
Pattern of Criminal Behavior and Ongoing Investigation
Sheriff Bill Brown described the crime as involving “calculated, cold-blooded, and criminally sophisticated premeditation.” Before her murder arrest, Ashlee faced false imprisonment charges in November 2025 after allegedly holding a volunteer searcher against his will, though those charges were later dismissed.
The FBI continues assisting local authorities in the investigation, having recovered substantial evidence implicating Ashlee in her daughter’s death. She remains in custody without bail on first-degree murder charges.
